Do not let my next statement stop you from reading the rest of this review. Promise? Ok, good. Now that we have an understanding what I say next will not scare you so I am just going to say it: the hardcover is 582 pages. Please do not make that deter you (you promised, remember). This book is glorious. Really, it is. It is my favorite of the year.

I took this book with me on my vacation to Ireland which was perfect: this book is set in Ireland! I couldn’t read about Cyril Avery’s unique life fast enough. At times you will love Cyril, get mad at him, be sad for him, etc.  You will feel like you know him as if he were real. Like when you watched Forrest Gump and thought it was a true story…or was that just a gullible me? Give me a break: I was 13 and realized at the running across America part that it was not a true story, but I digress.

Getting back on track:

As a baby, Cyril Avery, was adopted by a wealthy family and reminded very often how he actually isn’t a ‘real’ Avery. His family life was rather unconventional and without someone to really talk too, he leads a secret life. We find ourselves on his journey from his ripe age of 8 to his 70’s: his family life, his friendships, love life, and long journey to self discovery. It’s one wild ride, and like I said earlier: sometimes you want to shake Cyril, hug Cyril, yell at him, cry with him, what have you. But you will always be rooting for him to be loved.

The author, John Boyne, did a wonderful job of creating authentic characters. He weaved their stories in such a way throughout the book: I especially liked how he wove them in at the end.

Now go and read this book. You can thank me later. XO

  7. Ahhh! I don’t know if I could pick a favorite book from last year if a gun was held to my head. I read so many good ones. This sounds like an excellent book. I haven’t heard of it, but looking into it now.

  8. Great review, Ahh yes I’ve been dying too read this book since it first came out. I heard nothing but great raving reviews about it, plus it looks and sounds absolutely amazingly fantastic and right up my alley. Thank you so much for sharing your awesome post.
