5 disco balls

I finished this book a few days ago and already miss the characters, well most of them 😉
This was such a fun read!
Twenty-something Nikki still doesn’t know what she wants to be when she grows up; me either and I’m in my late 30s, so she shouldn’t feel bad. Also can we talk about how the main character’s name is Nikki – spelled the same way and all – my excitement over this detail is monumentous! #booknerd
Modern girl, Nikki, gets a part-time job at a community center teaching “creative writing” to traditional Punjabi widows. A mistaken encounter with a romance novel leads the class of women to write and discuss erotic stories of their own. Some of them will mirror their stories from real life and others will use their imagination: either way, they are just waving their hands saying “Hey look, I’m still here. I have desires, wants and needs.” That is not an exact quote of course, just me making a point.

But, there is trouble lurking. In a traditional community these stories are taboo and shameful. “The Brothers” are a group of men in the community who keep the women in line and when they catch wind of this, well let’s just say they aren’t too pleased (well maybe some of the men are, ha!). There is also a bit of mystery in the book: one where we follow a potential crime where the facts remain hush and aren’t probed in fear of a man’s wrath and community reputation. When these women come together they realize they have a voice.
There is so much personality in this book. You cannot help but laugh and cry, and wish you knew these characters in real life. I recommend picking this one up during your next bookstore adventure.

I thought the same thing at first, I would say its a 3.5 on the flame meter at times, but the stories bring you on a journey of learning about what makes these women tick.
