The most fruitful book club discussion I have had to date has been centered around this book.

After finishing this one I had to let my thoughts marinate a bit.
I am calling the writing vibe: eerie flow. I just made that up, but it sounded right. The whole tone and the build up to the end left me feeling…I can’t find the right word to verbalize my feeling.
When Phoebe seeks solace with a religious cult, its unsettling to the reader. Through alternating chapters you read her perspective, the cult leader’s John Leal, and her boyfriend Will’s; but, all these perspectives are from Will’s point of view. Man, my brain is processing so many thoughts.
It was not my usual read – and I still have no clue how I feel – but it will certainly make for an interesting book club meeting. I had my book club discussion on this already and it was the most time we ever spent discussing the actual book (the whole book club session!). There was so much content – whether one liked the story or not – that we focused on (I won’t name them in fear of offering spoilers, but you get the idea). It was one of my most fruitful book club meetings yet.
I do admire how the author told the story.
Author, Victoria Namkung, interviewed The Incendiaries author, R.O. Kwon, and after reading it I felt I understood the story a bit better. Check out her interview here.

I’ve reviewed this book too. It is certainly different and makes you think. I found it hard to write my review too as I wasn’t fully sure what I thought about it.

its one I reflected on for days and I went back and forth, book club was great but it didn’t change that unsettling feeling I had about Will, Phoebe and John. I want to say more but I’ll hold my tongue in fear of spoilers.
