This Week:
The People in the Trees by Hanya Yanagihara
Published: August 13, 2013 by Doubleday (edition shown published July 10, 2018 by Picador)
Category: Historical Fiction, Fantasy, Magical Realism
Earlier in 2018 I read author Hanya Yanagihara’s A Little Life and it destroyed me. I still talk about this book: its so fresh in my mind. It probably doesn’t help that I created a Spotify playlist called All the Feels that were songs that reminded me of scenes from the book, and that I listen to it almost every day. But, I digress…
On a worktrip to Belfast, Northern Ireland, I stopped by Waterstones bookstore and had to grab a copy of the UK paperback version of A Little Life. It’s a different cover therefore it needs to be added to my collection: I already have the US paperback and hardcover versions. Since books are home decor then it’s okay have more than one copy of the same book – or at least that is what I tell myself.
While in the fiction section, I came across Yanagihara’s first novel The People in the Tress and of course I had to get that one too. They compliment each other so well don’t you think? Like, you can’t have one without the other. If the writing is anything like A Little Life, than I know I will love it.

Goodreads Synopsis:
In 1950, a young doctor called Norton Perina signs on with the anthropologist Paul Tallent for an expedition to the remote Micronesian island of Ivu’ivu in search of a rumored lost tribe. They succeed, finding not only that tribe but also a group of forest dwellers they dub “The Dreamers,” who turn out to be fantastically long-lived but progressively more senile. Perina suspects the source of their longevity is a hard-to-find turtle; unable to resist the possibility of eternal life, he kills one and smuggles some meat back to the States. He scientifically proves his thesis, earning worldwide fame and the Nobel Prize, but he soon discovers that its miraculous property comes at a terrible price. As things quickly spiral out of his control, his own demons take hold, with devastating personal consequences.

They are beautiful! I would want both too! I have bought more than one copy of a book due to a different cover! Totally acceptable. Great spotlight, Nikki!

Adding A Little Life to my list! I’ve never bought two copies of a book but books are pretty expensive here in NZ.

They look great together and I had to add People In Trees to my TBR because I really like the synopsis. I have a blogging playlist but have never done a playlist around how a book made me feel, I am going to give that a go.

I am more of a digital reader and tend to give away paperbacks if I have a kindle copy. My house would either be a fire hazard or explode otherwise 😉
