4.5 disco balls

I started this book in Belfast, brought it with me to Paris and Avignon, and wound up finishing it in Nice. I could say that this book is quite the world traveler.

I am tardy to the party in reading this book; mainly due to the fact that love triangles make me uncomfortable and I try to avoid them like the plague. What forced me to read this – and thank goodness for it because I was missing out – was my book club’s August pick.
Three’s Company? More like three’s a crowd.
The 1+1+1=3 equation is as follows: Andre and Celestial are childhood best friends, Roy and Andre are college friends, Roy and Celestial meet through Roy. Voilà
Celestial and Roy will get married with Andre as their witness. A little over a year into their marriage, Roy is convicted of a crime he did not commit and sent to prison for twelve years. Their marriage is put to the ultimate test, will it survive? Is it a matter of right place, right time for Andre but wrong place, wrong time for Roy? My goodness did this book send shivers down my spine (example below, ugly cries ensued). It was real: there was not a second that I didn’t believe any of the characters actions (even if I disagreed or they made me angry). It was gritty and emotional and it will move you. You will pick a side, or at least I did.
There is no doubt author Tayari Jones is a talented writer. I still can’t believe she got me to read a love triangle and rank it 5 disco balls in the end! By my standards that is exceptional 😉
I am looking forward to my book club discussion so I can tell another reader whose side I was on (and hear theirs) and vent about one of the characters. Have you read this book? Did you pick a side? Don’t tell, we don’t want to spoil it for those who haven’t read it. Just give me a clue so I can guess!

I couldn’t pick a side. I felt nobody was at fault. It was pure love and you can’t pick who you love…
