I bought this book in March of 2018 and it had been sitting on my shelf a bit too long. I typically do not read fantasy, but was intrigued by the synopsis and gravitated toward the stunning book cover. Fast forward to January 2019 and it was my book club book! Its a beast of a book clocking in at 527 pages so I thought I would enlist the help of the audiobook from the library to keep me on pace.
I am SO glad I picked up the audiobook! The book is action packed and narrator, Bahni Turpin, brought all the characters to life. She captured the emotions effortlessly that I would often listen to the audio while reading along (as I do like to hold a book in my hands).
There was to be no more magic in Orïsha; the king would see to that. Zélie would never forget the raid that killed her mother – a maji just like her – leaving her, her brother Tzain and father Baba to live in constant fear of Zélie being captured, or worse, killed.
Though magic was gone, were the Gods at work when they crossed the paths of Princess Amari and Zélie? Amari unknowingly in possession of something that will point to Zélie as the chosen one to bring magic back: leading to a long journey filled with self-discovery, carnage, anger, and hope. It will be very hard to keep dry eyes as you feel you are fighting right alongside the divîners against the evil King and his army.
Author, Roxanne Gay, reviewed Children of Blood and Bone on Goodreads and it was speaking what I felt. While there aren’t any major spoilers, there are some plot points discussed so tread lightly.
I was satisfied and also unsatisfied with the ending, but it definitely set up a Book 2 (Children of Virtue and Vengeance) that I will be reading once it comes out June 4, 2019!
I highly recommend this one on audio even if you aren’t an audio fan: the narration was just that good!
Have you read Children of Blood and Bone? Do tell!

I did like the book but was not blown away by it. It could be that I was expecting too much.

I think going the audiobook route for me created a different experience than just reading would have. I felt it opened my imagination more (I have a hard time visualizing scenes when I read them)

I really enjoyed this book and gave it a high rating. However I’m not a huge fan of the author anymore after she stuck her foot in her mouth one too many times on Twitter (look up Tomi Adeyemi/Nora Roberts if you haven’t seen what happened!)

I know 🙈 I was going to mention it in my post, but bit my tongue. It definitely can leave a sour taste in your mouth, it was disappointing.

Great review! I love the narrator but with how screaming their was from the main character and the writing, I couldn’t get into it personally

Yes, there were quite a few of those parts. During some of the fight scenes I couldn’t help but cry.
