Author Jenny Han is brilliant! She delivered a story reminiscent of Pretty in Pink. She’s the modern day John Hughes.

What a delight: a great read/listen for all ages. It made me want to relive my high school days and that is no small feat. Who wants to be a teenager again? Certainly not me; no way, no how. I don’t even want to remember the teenager I was – I like myself much more now – BUT, this book brought me back to that time and I can feel the butterflies in my stomach for youthful crushes as if it were yesterday. I found myself thinking who my fifteen year-old self would write letters to, and what I would have said. It would probably look a little like this:

lara jean

What’s this letter business you ask? Lara Jean wrote secret letters to her crushes when she was “letting them go,” so she could move on. They were for her peace of mind and never meant to be read by anyone: especially not the crushes themselves. When Peter – one of her crushes – approaches her about the contents of her letter to him, Lara Jean realizes that all her letters are missing and must have been sent to each crush. How embarrassing! Oh, and one of the letters was written to her older sister’s ex-boyfriend. Drama!

They recently adapted the book to a movie on Netflix, which is available now! You know what I will be doing tonight – Netflix binge her I come! Oh, and the main song played in the background is Lauv’s I Like Me Better – one of my favorite Saturday Nite jams – so I am sure to love the adaptation. [Spotify Movie Soundtrack]

All the Boys I Loved Before is Book #1 in a series. The second and third are P.S. I Still Love You (#2) and Always and Forever, Lara Jean (#3). I don’t recommend reading the book synopsis for Book #2 or #3, as to not give anything away for Book #1! But, I do recommend buying the box series or downloading all three audiobooks: you’re welcome. 😉

I watched the movie update: first, they mention John Hughes multiple times. So I guess my clever line about the author being a modern day John Hughes wasn’t so clever after all, but it does prove that I may be right so that is good. Second, they left out a lot and one major plot point, but it was still very cute. If you watched the movie and didn’t read the book, you will still enjoy the book: it’s worth the read/listen.

Now, what are you waiting for? Go grab this book!

Did you read/listen to this book, or see the movie, or both?! Do tell!

  1. It’s very unlike me to watch a movie before reading the book, but for some reason I did it in this case. Afterwards, I felt guilty for not having read the book first, because it’s such a good story! It’s great to hear the book will still be enjoyable after seeing the movie first.

P.S. Your “Dear Keith” made me really happy.
